>Inna-Godda-Da-Vida<
>not on recording<
A completely uncirculated BHS show (until now!)...You’ll never hear any complaints from me about new Butthole Surfers recordings coming to light...nor the generosity of those who are willing to share.
billydee’s pal, Chuck actually taped this, but Mr dee was able to send off the master fer me to transfer, so here she is in all her glory!
While this tour isn’t really under-documented, it was obviously a fairly short one. They had spent the early part of 1988 in the UK, and returned stateside to play a handful of shows after that. The rest of the time was spent mixing, releasing and doing press fer “Hairway to Steven”. These June 1988 shows are the first outside TX following Hairway’s release. They hit only “major” markets, it seems, probably flying into LA and doing the west coast jaunt from there, then NYC and doing a few east coast (Boston, NYC and this here)based from there.
The band had gotten really polished by this point. Rick Wallace had improved their sound infinitely from behind the board and they had been playing most of the songs from ‘Hairway’ for the better part of the previous year. These things combined means these shows are probably the most ‘professional’ of their career to this point.
By the time the Fall 1988 tour took place, they had 5 new songs (including the fully realized “Blindman) which, to me, makes that a post-‘hairway’ tour, albeit, the first full tour in support of the LP...more in line with how the band had operated previously. Here however, the set consists on many old staples, so they’ve got it down, fer the most part.
“Inna-Godda-Da-Vida” was played only during this short tour, but is not included on this recording. A bit heart-breaking , as this is BY FAR the best document of this tour, however, we do get the rare “Papa Don’t Take No Mess” inspired “James Brown” as well as a few other songs not performed on the other shows from this tour (from the shows that have surfaced). A trade off, if you will...
The sound on this is pretty spectacular. Just listen to Jeff’s bass on “Blindman”....mmmm, milky goodness.
So, there’s the write up, now go listen and enjoy, but PLEASE:
