TRANSFER/EDITING NOTES:
This is a recording I receieved from a trader friend in England about 4 years ago. While I was not aware at the time, I soon realized that the recording he had given me was of higher quality than other sources in circulation of The Who's '76 Seattle show. I have heard at least 2 other versions of this show which were inferior to the one here. Like many other shows of this tour, the performance is excellent. Personally, this is one of my favorite recordings from the 75-76 tour given its apparent completeness, powerful performance and the high quality of the recording. I believe this to be the best current source of this recording. The noise level is noticeably lower than other versions I've heard & there are fewer tape anomalies such as clipping, clicks, pops and/or any other occurences. There is a consistent clicking sound that can be heard on track 10 of disc one at about 3:35 to 5:10. This noise occurs on the source disc as well. I have tried to remove what I could from this section without deteriorating the sound quality, however, the clicks are still quite noticeable. Thankfully, this is the only section that is plagued with continuous anomalies.
One of the things I like the most about this recording is that you can hear Daltrey's vocals loud and clear. This has been a problem with a lot of audience recordings of The Who where Daltrey tends to be drowned out by either Townshend or Entwistle. This is not the case here. All instruments are heard fairly clearly. I'd say this is a bass dominant recording as Entwistle can be heard very well throughout. It's not overbearing such as on the '72 Berlin recording where Townshend's guitar drowns out the rest of the band. The recording is simply bass heavy. I didn't want to lower the bass level too much in the remaster. Once again, this would damage the original overall tone of the recording. I'll leave that to the listener to decide. A couple of easy eq adjustments can remedy this.
When I received the recording, the tracks were not seperated, meaning the whole recording was on 2 tracks on 2 discs. I have created single song tracks. A couple of fade-ins and fade-outs have been added as well where deemed necessary. A few adjustments to the frequency spectrum were made. A few frequency ranges were altered to produce a clearer, brighter sound. The sound quality of the recording seems to change noticeably at about 2:50 of track 3 and track 9 of disc 1. I have attempted to match, as closely as possible, the tonal qualities of all sections with shifts in frequency response. I also boosted both channels 4dB as the original output level was very low. No noise reduction or limiting/compression has been used which I think does more harm than good on most bootleg recordings. I hope you enjoy this great show as I have for years now. Long live The Who!
