This recording has caused me much distress. Originally received as "demos 1981\82", upon further examination, it actually turned out to be the earliest known soundboard recording. At one point, Gibby mentions that "This is our last show ever in San Antonio", which probably alludes to the fact they were moving from Texas to California. That move happened sometime around July of 1982, and only lasted a month or two before they returned to Texas, it seems.
Aside from not knowing all the song titles, any info on the early years is sparse and most of it is unable to be cleared up, even by the band themselves. KING clearly kept the most comprehensive info, but this is well before his tenure with the band, so it's pretty impossible to get all the facts on this one...
That being said, this is still a worthy addition to any Butthole Surfers collection. I have horded it long enough. It's time to let my baby fly free....
There are too many rarities to mention. 11 of the 16 songs have never been released. It is the only known recording with the Matthews brothers rhythm section. The performance is really great, my favorite show from the 'punk rock' era. Reckless abandonment prevails, but they are still tight...Paul is the definite star on this one. Plus, the quality is surprisingly good...a solid B+
DOA is a Bloodrock cover and was a staple of the early sets. The rest of the songs are originals. 'Desert' was resurrected for the 2002 shows, here it is in its original form.
The songs that are parenthesized are working titles for unknown songs. If you happen to know the actual titles, please help out!
The fact that I am torrenting an XGEN show may be an indication that this one is special. If there was a known better version any place, I'd try to get it to ya, but there's not, so here is what's out there...my copy is one gen higher than the gentleman I received it from, but I'm sure the difference is minimal if at all.
PS: Sometimes, this may circulate with a 'Matchstick' demo at the end, i left that off...
